Itinerary:

DAY 1: October 29 TUESDAYMANILA TO PHNOM PENH

  • Arrival in Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. We meet with our guide and transfer to our hotel for Check in, dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: October 30 WEDNESDAYPHNOM PENH TO SIEM REP

  • We will check out of our hotel after breakfast and start our tour at The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, an important historical site that gives a chilling look into the tragic past of the country. Formerly known as Security Prison 21 (S-21), it was a well-known detention and torture center during the Khmer Rouge regime in the late 1970s. The museum serves as a solemn tribute to the victims and a reminder of the significance of preserving and learning from history to prevent such atrocities from occurring again. Next, we will visit the Royal Palace, a stunning complex that displays traditional Khmer architecture and is home to the Silver Pagoda, which holds many national treasures. We will then go to the National Museum of Cambodia, a notable cultural institution that showcases Cambodia’s rich history and artistic heritage. Here, we will learn about the early kingdoms, the influence of Indian culture, the rise and fall of the Angkor Empire, and the subsequent periods of Khmer history. Following this, we will visit a traditional Khmer cooking school in Phnom Penh. With the guidance of skilled chefs, we will learn to prepare classic Cambodian dishes like Fish Amok, Lok Lak, and Nom Banh Chok, gaining insights into the techniques, flavors, and presentation styles that make Khmer cuisine unique. If time permits, we will visit a Silk-weaving Factory on our way to Siem Reap. Upon arrival in Siem Reap, we will take a leisurely walk along the riverside promenade to soak in the local atmosphere and enjoy the scenic views of the river and sunset. Finally, we will check in to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay. Optional dinner outside the hotel and a self-guided tour of the Night Market are available.

DAY 3: October 31 THURSDAYSIEM REP

  • Today, we will explore the world-famous temple complex, Angkor Wat. It is one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, built in the early 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire. Originally dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, it later transformed into a Buddhist temple and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1992. Our tour starts at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, the most beautiful and best-preserved entrance to the largest complex in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Angkor Thom, the royal city, was constructed in the late 12th to early 13th century. We then visit Ta Prohm, known as the “Jungle Temple,” built by Jayavarman VII in honor of his mother. The temple, engulfed by the jungle, showcases the unique Bayon architecture blending with nature, made famous by the movie “Lara Croft: Tomb Raider” starring Angelina Jolie. Our final destination is Angkor Wat, the most renowned temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park. Once the heart of the powerful Khmer kingdom, Angkor Wat’s Pagoda offers a spectacular view from the tower summit, where we can climb steep steps. Our guide will share fascinating stories of the Khmer empire and ancient kings. We return to our hotel for dinner and overnight stay. An optional dinner at Chef Luu Meng’s Restaurant can be arranged, subject to availability.

DAY 4: November 01 FRIDAYSIEM REP TO BANTEAY MEANCHEY

  • After breakfast, we will leave our hotel and drive to Banteay Meanchey province in northwest Cambodia. Our first stop will be the Banteay Chhmar Complex, which is one of the largest temple-city complexes built by a Khmer king. Unfortunately, the temple is not well preserved as no restoration work has been done here in the 20th century. The layout of the temple is similar to Angkor Thom and other structures associated with Jayavarman VII. The outer gallery is decorated with bas-reliefs showing military battles and scenes of daily life, similar to those found in Bayon. We will explore the central sanctuary, galleries, and towers adorned with intricate stone carvings. A highlight of Banteay Chhmar is the Hall of Dancers, which showcases beautifully preserved carvings of Apsara dancers, mythical creatures, and deities, offering a glimpse into the artistic and cultural heritage of the Khmer Empire. In recent years, extensive restoration and conservation work has been carried out at Banteay Chhmar to protect its heritage from environmental threats. Visitors can learn about these conservation projects and support the preservation of this important cultural site. After our visit, we will check in to our hotel for dinner and spend the night there.
